Miley Cyrus’ performance at the 2013 VMAs made headlines and got people talking for days after the event, but the star kept a surprisingly low profile… up until now. There were statements that she “couldn’t be happier with the performance” released shortly after the event but not much else. However, Miley finally spoke about the VMAs performance in a brief interview for MTV and shed light on the reasoning behind the intensely criticized number.
So, why did she decide to show up in raunchy lingerie, use a giant foam hand as a prop and give a visual representation of “twerking” (a word recently added to the Oxford dictionary, btw)? To make history, obviously. “You’re wanting to make history. Me and Robin [Thicke] the whole time said ‘You know you are about to make history right now?’”, she stated adding that she’s delighted that her duet got people talking: “It is an amazing thing that I think now it is three days later and people are still talking about it.”
According to her, all she did was follow the footsteps of Britney and Madonna, who caused similar controversy in their time of glory: “You know now… you know what’s happened. Madonna’s done it, Britney’s done it. Every VMAs performance, anyone that performs…that’s what you are looking for.”
